Where to find artists on Saturday.

Still working on map for Saturday. At some of these locations several artists are collaborating on a wall or building. For example, 17 represents the public toilet block, which will have at least four artists beautifying it.

Mural Madness Sponsors

Mural Madness is a community project relying heavily on support and sponsorship. Many artist are providing their own paint and gear to help beautify Brighton. Mural Madness would like to thank WATTYL Christchurch for their donation of white, grey and cream paints.
We still need lots primary colours - any offers??
Another wonderful sponsor is EMBASSY who will help with sponsorship of cans, as most of our artists are graphers.
Another  major sponsor is ACCESSMAN who have amongst other things, offered to supply a scissor lift and sponsor  an artist.

Brighton thanks you all for your support.

Mural Madness Movie

The launch of Mural Madness looms!

On Sat 3 November over 25 artists will be taking to the streets in and around the Brighton Mall to do their magic on assigned walls. The aim is to beautify Brighton with art.  Mural Madness will be launched at 10am under Richard “Popx” Baker’s original mural on the Couplands wall. If wet, it will be postponed until 10am on Sunday 4 November. Once launched, the artist will have the month of November to complete their walls. Come along to Brighton to watch the progress! Artists from all over New Zealand, and even further afield are freely giving of their talent and time.

Jon Drypnz, a well know Wellington artists offered to help beautify a few walls in Brighton while staying in Christchurch for a few days. As he has a passion for bikes, he was keen to help out the bike shop which was constanly being scribbled on.

Christchurch: A month of mural painting

By Steve Carter
"It’s fun to watch ideas seed a whole new chain of creativity.
After the first ‘gap’ project in New Brighton saw the painting of a large mural on the exposed wall of a building whose neighbour had gone the way of the earthquakes, it inspired Sue Davidson to conceive of the idea of a whole month of mural painting … a suburb filled with fabulously painted walls   ....... Steps and garden walls

The hope is that Mural Madness will spread. Garden paths, fences, garage doors........... The list is growing of people who would like their front walls beautified.

A few tasters

Fish and Chicken - a local takeaway - had asked the New Brighton Art Gallery for a mural, as their window was constantly being tagged. Although it wasn't November yet, we decided to put one up anyway, just to keep the ball rolling. Lyn Taylor, from the NB Art Gallery had one of her students, and Jim Hobby help her.

New Brighton Kindy

New Brighton Community Kindergarten had lost its muralled wall in one of the many quakes, so local artists Lyn Taylor and Jim Hobby offered to paint a new one. They soon discovered that painting on corrugated iron was a challenge...........

News of Mural Madness spreads on FBk

Once the idea was hatched and an event page setup on FaceBook, word spread quickly. http://www.facebook.com/events/380959221976150/  Although the event was set for November, visiting artists were soon offering to beautify walls for us. Artists are such amazing people, who give so readily, and ask for nothing in return.

Rebecca May from Renew Brighton offers Cinzah Merkins and Karl Sheriden, from Auckland, a wall. They were passing through Christchurch while filming their doco about New Zealand street art.  www.dregs.co.nz   http://seekayem.com/

Two years on......

Two years on, we are still surrounded by much devastation, as buildings are demolished in preparation for a major rebuild. As a result of this life shattering experience, communities, neighbourhoods and individuals have come together to make things happen. Mural Madness is one of these community initiatives. All it took was one collaborative mural on a wall - and the idea evolved.

This mural started as a seascape by Lyn Taylor and Jim Hobby, as a result of Renew Brighton  organising a community day to "fill the gap" where a building had been demolished in the mall. A few weeks later, Richard "Popx Art" Baker (and friends) added a frame of hearts to create the word LOVE. This wonderful collaboration has become known as the Love Mural, and was, in my mind, the inception of Mural Madness. It now offers a colourful back drop to market days.

Earthquakes

In February 2011, many buildings in and around Brighton were devastated by the earthquakes. The army took up residence in the Pier car park to help support locals. Hot meals were helicoptered in from Rangiora. Everyone was in survival mode..... and the ground kept on shaking.
